The Precision Machine Shop’s One-Stop Shop

Precision machine shops face enormous challenges, from tight deadlines to soaring costs to labor shortages. Outsourcing often generates an entirely new set of challenges, with parts dispersed to multiple finishing shops across the country.

If your shop is drowning in finishing logistics, it’s time to consolidate your outsourced jobs and switch to a one-stop precision grinding company that offers multiple capabilities.

United CGTR Is Your One-Stop Shop

As leaders in American manufacturing, United CGTR provides services nationwide, maintaining a vast array of capabilities and technologies under one roof.

Mill-turn shops trust us for precision centerless grinding, thread rolling, wire EDM, and Swiss precision machining. We also have a trusted network of vendors and can manage entire supply chains for our customers.

Our all-inclusive setup allows customers to request multiple services with a single purchase order—no more coordinating vendors or shipping parts back and forth to multiple shops.

Get These Top-Tier Services from United CGTR

Ready to streamline your workflows, elevate your customer experience, and eliminate costly delays? United CGTR is here to help. Here’s an overview of the services we offer in-house or through our network of well-vetted vendors:

Centerless grinding

Centerless grinding makes small, round-diameter parts even rounder, producing a machined surface that standard turning processes cannot achieve. Our grinding wheels remove excess material and finish the part’s surface with precision.

Customers choose United CGTR’s centerless grinding service for parts such as:

  • Round bars

  • Tubing

  • Input shafts

  • Pump shafts

  • Bushings

  • Pins

These services fall under the umbrella of our centerless grinding service:

  • Infeed grinding. We use infeed grinding (i.e., plunge, profile, or end-feed centerless grinding) to grind cylindrical parts into intricate shapes with complex profiles and radii, tight tolerances, and various outside diameters. Our infeed grinding specialists craft industrial cutting tools, punches, and core pins for mold-making, along with bolts, studs, rivets, pins, and other components.

  • Thru feed grinding. We offer thru feed grinding for simple parts requiring consistent surface roundness, such as pins, dowel pins, and components that need grinding only on the outermost diameter. Our experts pass each part between two wheels, grinding the surface to your tolerance specifications.

  • Form grinding. Core pins, cutting tool blanks, mandrels, punches and poppets, are all examples of form-ground parts. To achieve optimum results, the form grinding wheel’s cutting face is contoured to the reverse shape of the final cylindrical part.

  • Crush grinding. Parts with several diameters, radii, and feature locations are ideal for our crush grinding service, which forms a multi-shape part in a single process.

  • Bar grinding. OD grinding with a standard lathe isn’t effective for exceptionally long or large-diameter parts. United CGTR uses bar grinding to mitigate deflection for long workpieces and ensure the highest quality.

Thread rolling

Thread rolling is a method of shaping precision threaded components to achieve exceptional tensile, shear, and fatigue strength.

Unlike thread cutting—which weakens the threads—the cold-forged thread rolling process enhances the part’s structural integrity without removing any material.

Wire EDM

For intricate parts with tight tolerances, United CGTR offers Wire EDM services. Wire EDM’s electrothermal shaping process cuts conductive metals without applying harmful physical pressure.

Swiss screw machining

Our 11-axis Swiss screw machines turn wheelhouse parts up to 1.25” in diameter, small parts like studs and screws, and parts with large length-to-diameter ratios. The Swiss screw machine feeds each workpiece through a guide bushing, focusing all cutting to the strongest support point.

Fast and cost-effective, our Swiss machining services combine turning and milling capabilities via a single operation that prevents deflection and ensures unmatched cutting precision.

Material sourcing

United CGTR handles the material sourcing for numerous precision machine shops. We ensure high-quality raw materials that are budget-aligned and part-specific.

Coating and heat treating

If your part requires coating or heat-treating processes such as case hardening, plasma coating, or titanium nitride coating we can work with our trusted vendors to coat or treat your parts according to your specifications.

Fluorescent penetrant inspection (FPI)

FPI identifies surface-compromising defects in a workpiece’s substrate by immersing the part in highly sensitive fluorescent dye. The FPI process reveals cracks, leaks, and casting and forging imperfections that would compromise the part’s durability.

Magnetic particle inspection (MPI)

This simple non-destructive testing method identifies both surface and substrate defects in ferromagnetic materials such as steels and nickel-based alloys. MPI conforms each workpiece to your exacting specifications so you can deliver each part with pride.

Leveraging Multiple Capabilities to Save You Time and Money

Want some examples of how we’ve leveraged our numerous capabilities to help precision machine shops consolidate their outsourced jobs?

A customer needed carbide slugs, so they sent in a square block of carbide. We used wire EDM to cut the slugs, then took them to our thru feed diamond grinding machine to grind the surfaces to tolerance specifications. Finally, we brought the parts back to our wire EDM department to cut them into disks.

Another customer who already came to us for centerless grinding and thread rolling noticed we also offered Swiss precision machining services. They requested a quote for a shaft that needed finishing operations to achieve tight concentricity requirements and diametrical tolerances. We made the parts on our Swiss screw machine, then used centerless grinding and thread rolling services to bring them into spec.

We have the equipment, resources, and experience necessary to handle various jobs with expert precision, conscious adaptability, and quick turnaround, all in an immaculately clean, safety-supervised environment.
